The soft white kohiki glaze is accented by delicate speckling and a gently ribbed surface. Crafted in the historic region of Shigaraki in Shiga Prefecture, this mug emerges from one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, boasting a lineage that spans over twelve centuries. The local clay, enriched by prehistoric lake deposits, gives Shigaraki ware its distinctive, coarse quality and remarkable warmth.
Rather than pursuing a flawless, glossy finish, the master makers allow the raw, organic character of the material to shine through. The subtle variations in the glaze and the visible specks of iron mean that no two pieces are entirely identical.
With its generous handle and comforting form, this mug is ideal for a morning filter coffee, a rich matcha latte, or a soothing herbal infusion.
To preserve the character of the traditional kohiki glaze and natural clay body, this mug requires gentle hand washing. It is not suitable for use in the microwave or the dishwasher.

About the Region
About the Region
Shigaraki Ware
Originating in Shiga Prefecture, Shigaraki-yaki stands as one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, with a history spanning over eight centuries. The craft is fundamentally defined by the unique quality of its local clay, sourced from the ancient bed of Lake Biwa.
During the multi-day firing process in traditional wood-burning kilns, flying wood ash melts into a natural green glaze that flows across the unglazed clay. The intense heat leaves behind warm, reddish-brown fire marks, meaning each ceramic work bears a completely organic signature of the flames.
