A plump green frog holds a broad leaf over its head like an umbrella against the colourful raindrops on this Kutani ware mug, hand painted by Chie Sakurai (櫻井 千絵) over the base hand made by Toshio Onouchi (小野内 俊夫).
Frogs are much loved in Japan, where rain brings them out and the word for frog, kaeru, also means "to return". They are often given as charms for a safe journey home, which makes this mug a thoughtful gift for a traveller as well as a cheerful companion on a rainy day.
The white porcelain lets the fresh greens of the frog and leaf stand out, and the softly tapered body and slim looped handle make this a comfortable everyday mug.

Kutani Ware
Established in 1655, Ishikawa’s Kutani-yaki is defined by its masterful use of the traditional Gosai palette, a vibrant quintet of red, green, yellow, navy, and purple. What truly sets Kutani apart is its freedom of expression. Rather than adhering to strict regional templates, each kiln is encouraged to develop its own artistic signature.
Here, porcelain is treated as a canvas; a vibrant fusion of heritage techniques and modern sensibility. This delicate balance between timeless tradition and contemporary functionality is the very soul of Kutani-yaki today.
