This elegant porcelain mug was crafted by Bunzan Gama, a kiln established in 1953. Located on a scenic hill overlooking the rural Arita landscape, they are the only Arita ware kiln using a so called "tunnel kiln" for their firing today.

Developed in 1996 by second-generation artisan Masashi Nakajima (中島 政司), each petal features a distinctive raised outline. This is achieved through the traditional Icchin (一珍) technique, a method where artisans hand-draw slip (liquid clay) using a squeeze bag, much like when decorating a cake. This technique allows them to build up a three-dimensional surface, giving life and movement to the design. Delicate white outlines drawn with this method frame the soft blue peony petals, finished with a hand-painted gold rim that follows the organic, graceful curves of the flower.

This lightweight mug is perfectly proportioned for daily enjoyment, whether you are savouring a fine loose-leaf green tea or a morning coffee. The unique shape of the rim and the beautifully curved handle ensure comfort with every sip, making it a splendid treat for yourself or an exceptional gift for a loved one who appreciates true artisan skill.

Not microwave safe. Dishwasher safe, however handwashing always recommended to preserve the intricate decoration for years to come.

About the Region

Arita Ware

Born in the early seventeenth century amidst the mountains of Saga Prefecture, Arita-yaki holds the distinction of being Japan's very first porcelain. The discovery of high-quality porcelain stone at Izumiyama transformed the quiet valley into a thriving epicentre of ceramic innovation. For centuries, the region’s output was exported globally through the nearby port of Imari, captivating European collectors with its radiant white body and glass-like smoothness.

The true essence of Arita ware lies in the purity of its raw material and the rigorous high-temperature firing required to vitrify the stone. This flawless white background provides a clean canvas for local masters, who traditionally apply intricate cobalt blue underglazes or vibrant overglaze enamels, balancing precise geometry with freehand brushwork.
