Experience the quintessential masterpiece of Fukushima’s potting heritage. This exquisite tea cup beautifully harmonizes the three defining pillars of historic Obori Soma ware into a single, functional work of art.

First, the eye is drawn to the signature "blue crackle glaze" (Aohibi), a delicate, glassy crazing that spreads across the surface like a beautiful, intricate web, mapping the unique story of its firing. Nestled within this mesmerizing texture is the iconic "running horse" (Hashirigoma) motif. Hand-painted and steeped in tradition, this auspicious symbol of good fortune and forward momentum brings a dynamic, positive energy to every sip.

Beyond its striking visual appeal, this bowl is a marvel of traditional engineering. It features the region's renowned "double-walled" construction (Niju-yaki). By skilfully crafting a hollow space between the inner and outer layers of clay, the vessel acts as a natural insulator. This ensures your favourite brew remains comfortingly hot for much longer, while the exterior of the bowl stays perfectly cool to the touch, allowing you to cradle your drink with complete ease.

Rich in cultural history and unparalleled in its practical design, this tea cup is more than an everyday essential, it is a deeply meaningful gift to honour a loved one, or a treasured heritage piece to elevate your own mindful tea rituals.

About the Region

Obori-soma Ware

Tracing its origins back 350 years in Fukushima, this venerable craft is celebrated for its signature Aohibi (blue crackle glaze) and ingenious double-layered construction (a unique design providing excellent heat insulation). Having faced the near-loss of its production base following the devastating 2011 earthquake, which forced 25 potters of the region to abandon their kilns, their collective spirit has fuelled an inspiring revival, with a small number of workshops reopening in new locations despite the adversity.

More than just ceramic history, these vessels embody a legacy of perseverance and renewal. Obori Soma artisans ensure that their cultural treasure remains vital and relevant. Each finished work stands as a symbol of regional pride, crafted to connect modern homes with the indomitable character of Fukushima.
