The enchanting animal design is a direct homage to the Choju-jinbutsu-giga scrolls (鳥獣人物戯画), an infamous set of picture scrolls preserved at Kozan-ji temple in Kyoto. These frolicking animals which are thought to have originally been painted in the mid 12th century, are now a Japanese National Treasure.

Pictured here is the scene of a sumo match between the rabbit and frog, from the first volume of the scrolls. Beautifully utilising the three-dimensional form of the cup, the artist paints the pond shore depicted in the background, on the inside of the bowl here.

Not suitable for microwave or dishwasher. To preserve the intricate hand-painted details and the integrity of the ceramic, please wash this item gently by hand using warm water and a soft sponge.
